K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea established in Tromsø, Norway
Dedicated to research on the law of the sea, a new K.G. Jebsen Centre is now established in Tromsø, Norway at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway. Hosted by The Faculty of Law and in partnership with Fritjof Nansen Inistitute, the K.G. Jebsen Centre will focus on key challenges facing the Law of the Sea in the 21st century.
During a six-year period as a K.G. Jebsen Centre, the new centre aims to become a leading national and international research institution renowned for its work on Arctic and High North issues.
The opening days in Tromsø on September 19-20 2013, has attracted interest and representatives from the international research community (Europe, China and Australia), Norwegian universities and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The grant of 36 MNOK is Stiftelsen Kristian Gerhard Jebsen’s largest donation to a single research centre so far, and probably the largest provided to a single research group in law in Norway. In addition, the university is channelling significant own resources to the centre.
