Call 2012 - K.G. Jebsen-centers for Medical Research

A substantial donation has made possible the establishment of a number of K.G. Jebsen centers for medical research at Norwegian medical faculties and university hospitals. The board of the foundation wishes to establish these centers in close cooperation with the medical academic milieus. In this the foundation wishes to adopt an approach and selection procedures similar to those used by the Research Council of Norway for calls such as Centers of Excellence and large research infrastructures.

K.G. Jebsen funding may support research that is in accordance with the host institutions’ and the research milieus’ own strategies and priorities. Norwegian medical faculties and associated university hospitals are therefore invited to nominate a limited number of strong research milieus from each geographic region (as listed below), that can subsequently apply for funding. Within each region, the selection of applicants should be made after consultations between university hospital and medical faculty. K.G. Jebsen centers for medical research may be hosted by a medical faculty or a university hospital. Already established Centers of Excellence and Centers of Innovation or research groups that participate actively in such centers are not eligible to apply.

A K.G. Jebsen centers for medical research will consist of research groups with complementary expertise and great potential in relation to translational medical research. At least one of the groups must have a clinical focus, be able to document substantial knowledge in the field and have access to a well‐defined patient material relevant to the research project. Translational research will in the context of a K.G. Jebsen center require that a clear and functional cooperation is established between clinical research groups and lab-based research groups or vice versa. The aim must be that new, important results from the laboratories as regards the pathogenesis of diseases, diagnostics and therapy can lead to improved treatment of patients in the future. Collaborations with research groups based at other Norwegian faculties and university hospitals may be included in the project, provided that this entails genuine cooperation.

One of the heads of the participating research groups must take overall responsibility for the proposal as its principal investigator (PI) and be prepared to head the planned K.G. Jebsen center should the proposal be retained for funding.

A K.G. Jebsen center may be granted a maximum of 4 millions NOK a year for a 4-year period. The overall budget of each center should allow for the critical mass/level of research activity necessary to push medical research a significant step forward. SKGJ funding should be seen as a contribution towards the realization of goals set by the host institutions’ themselves. It is therefore an important prerequisite for funding, that any SKGJ contribution is matched by resources from the research institutions at about the same level and that the institutions commit ”fresh” resources in addition to resources currently available to the research groups.

The research groups' academic competence, their complementary contributions to the planned collaboration plus an evaluation of the academic quality of the application and the project's feasibility of completion will form the basis for the expert evaluation carried out by the foundation. Merit will also be given to a clearly rooted international collaboration.

Three years after the establishment of the center, results in relation to achieved goals and academic production, including joint authorship, will be evaluated. The importance of the achieved results in relation to the future design of health‐promoting measures and treatment of patients will also be evaluated. A positive evaluation may make extended support from the foundation possible - depending on the outcome of the evaluation and the foundations’ own priorities.

Applications must contain the following:

1.  Cover pages (download template here)

2.  A project description consisting of:

a) A description of the research project, with clearly defined main goals and a presentation of sub‐goals in light of planned progress. The application must also include a description of the group's expertise in relation to the project and a description of how the collaboration is intended to be implemented in order to meet the defined objectives. The project description (consisting of points a) to e)), must not exceed seven pages.

b)  A description of how the budget, see 3) below, is linked to the project activities / subprojects. It should make clear which resources the host institution will employ in relation to the project (PhD- / post‐doctoral positions, other researchers, infrastructure, etc).

c)  A presentation of the research groups' other known sources of funding at the time of submission.

d)  A description of available infrastructure (patient material, databases, access to required facilities, major equipment etc.).

e)  A description of national and international partners and their contributions.

f)  Short CVs for all the heads of research groups and lists of their 20 most important publications (maximum three pages pr person).

3)    The budget sheet (download template here)

Proposals must be written in English.

For each proposal, there must be a letter signed by the principal investigator and the head of the host faculty / hospital. In cases where institutions other than the host institution are expected to contribute with resources to the project, a letter signed at the appropriate level of the contributing institution should be included. The letter should describe the nature of the resources to be committed and confirm awareness of the proposal and its budget.
